Title: (Tutorial 1)

Definitions of E-learning:

1) learning conducted via electronic media, especially via the internet
-http://en.wikitionary.org/wiki/e-learning

2) any learning that utilises a network (LAN, WAN or internet) for delivery, interaction, or facilitation. This would include distributed learning, distance learning (other than pure correspondence), CBT delivered over a network, and WBT. Can be synchronous, asynchronous, instructor-led or computer-based or a combination.

3) learning activities based on any electronic format

Characteristics:

1) internet
2) electronic based materials
3) allows self-study

E-learning is convenient. It is self-based learning and does not require a tutor physically. Almost all information can be available online as long as you have internet access.

E-learning also enhances learning with the use of online resources such as Applets, Flash player etc.

Drawbacks:

1. less time to talk to the teacher (less personalised)
2. not given a chance to clarify concepts (no 2-way feedback), email, online consultation (webcam, msn, ...)
3. what if i want to know more...
4. is technology available at the student's end? is internet access easily available?
5. online doesn't provide practical experience required for our future.

  • Cost of development - is the investment worthwhile?
I do not really quite think so. E-learning is best used for just researching on resources and information. But to invest in it and use it for future education purposes, it is not going to help the students to better prepare for the outside world when they grow up. They will be coped in the virtual reality.

  • Does the teacher (subject matter expert) possess the skills?
He should be possessed with the skills, or else he is unable to teach students on what they have to learn about e-learning.
  • Readiness of students?
Given advanced technology, students should be quite ready to accept the usage of computers and internet for their education purposes. In fact, i think that majority would have probably preferred online learning.
  • Availiabilty of PCs, internet connections?
This is provided on their own expenses. However, internet connections should be easily found given that Singapore is turning into a wireless country. Wireless internet can be easily detected outside.
